Yard & pests

Read and use a home insect barrier label

A perimeter spray treats only the places and pests listed on its label. It is not a substitute for cleaning, fixing leaks, and sealing entry points.

Why it matters: Spraying the wrong area or dose can expose people, pets, wildlife, or food without solving the pest problem.

Understand the job before starting

The label defines permitted locations and application instructions for the specific product.

A common mistake to avoid

A dilution or site used for another product may not be allowed here.

The order of the job

  1. Match the exact bottle
  2. Check the treatment area and weather
  3. Set the wand by the label
  4. Apply only the directed amount
  5. Let the area become safe before return

Check your supplies

Use what you already have. Check each item when it is ready.

Before you begin

Do not spray as a routine habit without a pest need. Do not spray people, pets, food surfaces, bowls, toys, electrical equipment, drains, or water. An indoor label does not make every indoor surface appropriate.

Match the exact bottle

Start here: Match the exact bottle

An adult wearing gloves and eye protection reads the label on a closed pesticide container outdoors.

Illustration: Read the pesticide label. Read the steps for your exact task.

Read-aloud is available in supported browsers; the written steps always remain available.

Find the product name, formulation, and EPA registration number.

Ortho Home Defense has multiple products and applicators.

Read the complete label on your container, not an instruction for a similar-looking bottle.

Before moving to the next step

Check this specific result: I have the instructions for my exact product.

If that result is not true yet, leave the box unchecked. Write what is missing in your notes; use the official instructions below when the equipment or situation differs.

How to use the video with this guide

Read “Before you begin” first. Watch the relevant part, pause, then return to the written step and its completion check. Use captions and playback speed if they help. A demonstration may cover only part of the task or show different equipment.

Your model’s instructions and current official guidance take priority. For urgent problems, follow the stop instructions without waiting to watch a video.

A concrete way to approach this task

Read the exact product label and confirm the site, application instructions, and access restrictions that apply to your situation.

What if I cannot complete a step?

If the label does not permit the intended use, do not improvise a dilution or location. Choose an approved method or ask for help.

Identify the exact step: “Match the exact bottle.” Record what you tried, what happened, and which item or model you used. Ask for help with that specific problem rather than repeating an unsafe or unsuccessful action.

Do not spray as a routine habit without a pest need. Do not spray people, pets, food surfaces, bowls, toys, electrical equipment, drains, or water. An indoor label does not make every indoor surface appropriate.

Connect this skill to everyday life

Write down the total move-in cash and monthly costs before applying. Ask which charges are required and which are optional.

Advertised rent is not necessarily the whole monthly cost. A refundable deposit still needs cash now. An application does not mean you have a signed lease.
